It was almost Christmas, that much was apparent. Zatz a Better Bagel had even joined in the festivities with a mixture of Christmas and Hanukkah decorations, and a five hour long loop of Christmas music repeated over and over.
Thadeus was on it's winter break and more of the students had gone home, Carey wasn't one of them. As far as she was concerned she had no home to go to, it would just be too complicated. Instead of moping around campus she signed on for a lot of extra hours at work. The distraction it provided was almost as good as the money she made.
This job had already provided her enough money to get a decent pair of winter boots and a coat. Now she was just saving up for extras like warm leggings and socks, warmer clothes, fabric, and if she saved up enough perhaps she would get a sewing machine. She had toyed with the idea of sending gifts back home anonymously, but after much thought she decided that would be a better thing to do a year from now, when she was a bit better established in her new life.
The store wasn't particularly busy, but Carey worked anyway. She refilled all of the sugar dispensers, napkin dispensers, refilled all of the plastic forks and knives, and had even scrubbed the tables. Now there was nothing left to do but poke the snowflake that hung above the register and pray that someone came in.
Carey didn't mind hard work, she was used to that. What she didn't like was sitting around with nothing to do. She was too afraid to do anything too crazy and goof off, and she had forgotten to bring a book with her today. The telltale jingle of bells went off as someone opened the shops front door.
"Hello" she called out cheerfully. Surely someone could help distract her from this awful boredom that had set in.
((OCC: Yea, sorry not much of a start hopefully someone will join her))

The person that walked in from the cold was a guy, a cute guy at that. With dark hair, dark eyes, and a jawline just strong enough to make him seem brooding. As he approached a little closer it occurred to her that she had seen him before. She was quite positive she had never talked to him before, she certainly didn't know his name. All the same Carey had the feeling she had seen him around school before, where she wasn't quite sure. Although Thadeus was bigger then her old high school, it was still small enough that she could recognize someone as a student.
His coat was old and worn out, much like the one she had hanging up in the break room. The fact that he didn't appear to be the typical rich Thadeus student made Carey like him a bit more, goodness knows she could relate. The school seemed to be divided on several levels depending on the origin of their powers and how much cash they had to burn. That system made Carey the lowest of the low in terms of status, luckily her outgoing personality had won her a few friends.
He asked for a bagel recommendation, truth be told it wasn't a request she got too often. Most customers stuck to the standard flavors, the more adventurous ones seemed to call out names at random. All the same given how slow things were tonight she was happy to do any sort of talking, even if it was just about bagels.
"Well I guess it all depends on what you are in the mood for. If you want something sweet the cinnamon raisin ones are good, we also got a special gingerbread one for the Holidays. If you want savory the as-i-ay-go cheese ones are pretty good too." Her West Virginia accent caused her to completely butcher the pronunciation of asiago, but her recommendation was a sound one.
She turned around and looked at the menu behind her searching for inspiration. There were so many combination it was hard to pinpoint just one. Most of the bagels here were pretty tasty, it just depended on what you like. "I don't know most of them are pretty good. We also got a lot of toppings; flavored creme cheese, butter, smoked fish, you name it."
It occurred to Carey that he may have been having trouble deciding on a bagel in the first place. Throwing a whole bunch of options at him probably wasn't going to help much. "You just take your time deciding, it ain't like your holding up the line or nothing. And feel free to ask me any questions about the menu or anything else for that matter. I was going a little stir crazy in here with no one to talk to." she gave him a big friendly smile. Carey often talked to much but her charming southern accent, and friendly demeanor made it all a bit easier to pull off.

"well i guess it all depends on what you are in the mood for. if you want something sweet the cinnamon raisin ones are good, we also got a special gingerbread one for the holidays. if you want savory the as-i-ay-go cheese ones are pretty good too." she explained, her voice thick with an accent robert couldn't put a finger on; he had never been able to watch t.v or go anywhere, so his known facts aside from the pacific northwest of washington state were dull. he guessed she was from somewhere south on the east coast, though even that was shaky. robert titled his head slightly as he thought, a trait he never really grew out of. really, anything sounded good; he was in the mood for something not so sweet, for he knew he'd be overloaded with pastries later on in the evening. noelle always did that, as though he had never had a slice of pie in his life.
she turned to look at the menu behind her as robert was about to speak, and he knew that she was about to say something - so instead he waited. "i don't know most of them are pretty good. we also got a lot of toppings; flavored creme cheese, butter, smoked fish, you name it." she was right; though the demigod couldn't really read the names due to terrible eye sight and being able to afford glasses or contacts, it was still obvious by the huge menu dedicated to only bagels. "it's a hard choice, they all sound pretty good at the moment." he chuckled, and then decided to stop contemplating and spit it out. he'd always been an indecisive person, and it almost always made cashier situations awkward. "you just take your time deciding, it ain't like your holding up the line or nothing. and feel free to ask me any questions about the menu or anything else for that matter. i was going a little stir crazy in here with no one to talk to." robert laughed at that; in both starbucks and circa, there was always something to do; by the end you wished that it had been a slow day.
"i think i'll stick with the, ah, asiago." the girl wasn't the only one to kill the pronunciation. "and believe me, once you work a few shifts at starbucks you'd wish to be back here." he said humorously, still trying to remember her name. usually he was pretty good with remembering people, though it's not like he ever really met her - only vaguely seen her walking or in the courtyard. "you go to thaedeus, right? you must be new, though, because i thought i knew everyone." he asked with a laugh, leaning to the side then shifting back. his feet hurt; the shoes he was wearing were two sizes too small. that was defiantly next on his list of things to buy - fitting shoes. "i'm robert, by the way." the senior smiled at her then, though didn't extend the usual hand - it'd be awkward, leaning over counter. he could of easily done it standing straight with his arm length and height, though the girl would have to bend her arm to reach.

Once he said his order Carey walked over to get him his bagel, still listening to him. Apparently he worked at Starbucks, she didn't envy him for that. Carey wouldn't have minded working at a place that was always busy, however she would have minded all the special orders. Carey had only been to a Starbucks once before, she found the menu intimidating and the prices too high. Besides drinking a few cups of the cheap coffee they served at the church had led her to believe that all coffee tasted like cigarette buts smelled.
Seriously, what the hell is a Decaf Double tall non-fat extra-dry cappuccino.? Most of the things in bagels were pretty basic, even if she didn't know what something was she could still read the bin where it was located. Toasted or not, a couple flavors of creme cheese, locks it wasn't all that hard to put together an order. Quite frankly Carey had no idea what the difference was between a lot of the things at Starbucks, how many ways could you possible prepare the same little bean.
He mentioned Thadeus Carey smiled happy to know that she had in fact seen him there before. "Yep, I've only been here a few weeks. The schools kinda weird, but I like it so far. she said catching the bagel in between the tissue paper and pulling it from the bin. The store was empty so she probably could have gone that extra step and started babbling about super powers and radioactive energy drinks, but she didn't. While she was curious to find out what this boy was, she knew it didn't really matter. Carey treated everyone the same, unfortunately not everyone had the same attitude towards nymphs. If he asked she would happily answer, but she saw no reason to bring up a sensitive subject.
"Well it's nice to meet you Robert, I'm Carey. ... Uh do you want me to toast the bagel or add anything on it?" it wasn't the most graceful transition but hey a job was a job. [/b]"I haven't had a chance to meet too many people outside of class yet. Are you a senior?"[/b] she asked making conversation

"yep, i've only been here a few weeks. the schools kinda weird, but i like it so far." robert laughed silently at the statement. he certainly couldn't disagree; considering that the school was made for the offspring and gods, super-humans and nymphs, it was understandable. because it was totally normal to have classes in mythology and combat training, right? "it's certainly different." he mused.
"well it's nice to meet you robert, i'm carey...uh do you want me to toast the bagel or add anything on it?" her name sparked something in his head, and he recognized her easily. the new nymph in junior year? yeah, that was it. that reminded him of a girl he had dated only a few months back, but she had then abruptly left the school without leaving any contact information...she'd been a start nymph, however, and he doubted that carey was. her eyes weren't a glowing light blue or yellow, yet a flickering river color. "uh, toasted would be great." robert wasn't exactly an expert on bagels, though he did know that he liked his crunchy. that was more than likely because that's what he grew up with for breakfast - burnt bagels. it had been because his adoptive mother couldn't afford a nice toaster, so instead used a broken one from the sixties. at least if they were burnt you couldn't taste the month-old staleness.
"i haven't had a chance to meet too many people outside of class yet. are you a senior?" she asked while continuing to slide the bagel into the toaster. "yeah. so what house are you in?" robert instantly regretted the words. one question led to the next, and soon they'd be broaching the subject of godly parents. it was the usual talk between thaedeus students, though always a conversation the senior tried to stray from. naturally, as soon as he admitted to his hades heritage, people shrunk away. the reasons why varied - they might just instantly not trust someone who might be exactly like their father, or because it's a known fact that those associated with the children of hades often get dragged into hades's shit.
