C H I M E R A this monstrous fire-breathing creature was one of the offspring of typhon and echidna. considered to be female despite the mane it possessed, the chimera had the body of a lioness, a tail that ended with a snakes head, and a goat head that arose from the middle of her spine. at the command of king lobates of lycia, the chimera was defeated by bellerophon. the hero rode on pegasus high above the chimera, safe from her three heads and fire breath, and shot her with a spear form from molted lead that pierced her skin after being melted by her breath.

E C H I D N A this drakaina with the head and torso of a woman, and the body of a serpent was considered “the mother of all monsters,” for she bore most of the monsters of the mythological world with her 100-headed husband, typhon. she is the daughter of the sea deities phorcys and ceto, while she herself gave birth to the chimera, the hydra, and the infernal hounds, cerberus and orthrus. she also gave birth to the dragon ladon, who protected the golden apples of the hesperides, as well as another dragon who protected the golden fleece. typhon was sealed under mount etna, while she and her children were allowed to live as future challenges to the demigods and heroes.

G O R G O N S deriving from the greek word “gorgos,” meaning “dreadful,” these creatures were indeed, exactly that. the gorgons were three sisters, who had brass hands, hair of living snakes, fangs, and an icy stare... that could turn you to stone. sound familiar?
stheno - the eldest of the three sisters and one of the two immotal sisters, born to phorcys and ceto in the caverns below mount olympus. she was known to be the most vicious of the three; killing more men than both of her sisters combined.
euryale - the middle sister, and the second of the two immortal sisters, born to phorcys and ceto. her most distinguishing quality over her sisters, are her bellowing cries, particularly in the tale of her sister medusa’s death at the hands of perseus.
medusa - the youngest and only immortal of the three sisters, born to phorcys and ceto. possibly the most famous after being beheaded by the hero perseus. she was cursed by athena after being discovered with poseidon in athena’s temple.

C H R Y S A O R sometimes believed to be a young man, he is also said to be a giant, winged boar. he was born of poseidon and medusa, though it is believed that is was a “higher birth,” since him, and his brother pegasus were both born after medusa had been beheaded by perseus. the most popular myth is that he was born from medusa’s neck.

P E G A S U S most commonly known as “the winged horse", he was the brother of chrysaor and the son of poseidon and medusa. it is said that he sprung from the blood of medusa’s neck after perseus had beheaded her, while his brother chrysaor, was born straight from medusa’s neck. pegasus is most commonly associated with helping the hero bellerophon with his fight against the chimera, as well as the amazons. after leaving bellerophon, pegasus returned to mount olympus and was given the task of carrying zeus’ lightning bolts.
