brett hated plane trips. and it wasn't even the airborne part he disliked - it was everything else. being an obsessive worrier, he was constantly fussing over bags being too heavy or arriving late to the gate. mia was used to it, of course; she barely or never complained when he'd rush or impulsively check his pockets. and the fact that mia was maybe a month away from delivery didn't help with the nerves, either. they'd decided to visit brett's parents before the baby was born, then have them come visit sometime in the following months. his dads hadn't even met the love of his life yet, let alone meet him with sight. visiting as soon as possible was a no brainer. however, the tickets were expensive as fuck - flying across the country usually was. mia had bluntly laid it on the table; without using the money from her father, they wouldn't be able to afford it. so he'd just have to suck it the fuck up if he wanted to go see them.
brett was trying his best not to rush her. the urge to impatiently tap his foot when they went through security was restrained, as was the constant checking of his watch. he'd conquered reading time, or at least digitally. once they had boarded with bags stowed and they were finally sitting, he was fine. the six hours went by smoothly; considering the flight was a red eye, they easily slept through the whole thing. everyone on the plane was woken up when the arrival bing and announcement was sounded. mia had been leaning her her head on his shoulder and brett had his hand casually resting on her thigh.
the sun was just rising when they'd left the gate. he wasn't used to the heat and humidity which had instantly engulfed him as they stepped into the airport. the huge windows showed the city skyline of philadelphia, faded and blue by the 'haze' due to pollution. of course, brett was seeing it for the first time; a small smile was played out on his face as he watched. "welcome to the east coast." he said dryly then glanced down at the mia. "they should be at the entrance, though they might be late. they usually are." brett finished the statement with a chuckle.
for the first time, he was feeling some anticipation. he knew they'd love mia and hopefully, mia would love them. it was more how he'd be seeing them for the first time. biting the inside of his cheek, he tugged along all of their suit cases until they were at the escalator. sighing, brett looked over at mia and smiled before getting on. holding his breath, he looked wildly around for the people who'd raised him. he could guess who they were by the two grinning men standing about ten feet away. as soon as he was on solid ground, brett almost ran to them.
one was quite tall with dark hair and shining blue eyes; the other had a much slighter frame with light hair tufted a bit in front. "oh my god, brett!" the shorter one said highly and wrapped him in a hug. "you've actually grown since i've seen you, wow. you're almost as tall as your other dad, which is saying something. you're also getting his good looks!" brett chuckled and grinned. "i'm not quite sure how that works, pop. thanks though." he let go and gave his dad a hug, then turned back to mia. they'd met over webcam before, though he felt like that should get introduced again. "as you know; dad, mia. mia, mia, pop." his pop smiled warmly and gave mia a hug just as he'd given brett. "red eyes are rough, eh? better get you home before the baby pops out from stress!" he said in a manner where it was difficult to define whether he was serious or joking. brett coughed then wrapped an arm around mia. "here, i'll grab one of those." his dad spoke up and took one of the heavier suit cases. brett got the other and they began to the parking lot. "they're a bit much, though they're easy to get used to." brett said in an undertone.

It was hard, at first. Being up so high in such a confined space was making her nervous. The entire flight she was practically clinging to Brett, until she finally fell asleep, with an hour to spare in the flight. She had some pretty pleasant dreams, mixed with some nightmares that must have been brought on by the anxiety, and she awoke to the lovely noise of her ears popping as the plane descended to the ground. She could see all the lights of the city, and smiled brightly, before looking at Brett. He seemed pretty excited to actually see him parents for the first time, and she really couldn't blame him. These were the people who raised him without judgment for the greater portion of his life. It was beautiful, really. She was also excited to meet such wonderful people. In fact, she would probably cry a bit.
When they got through the gates, and all the hectic rushing Brett was putting her through was over, there they were, standing less than ten feet away. Brett rushed over... Or was met, rather. And soon, she herself was gathered up in hugs and flamboyant gay men. Alright. So far, so good. Now she just needed to meet his little sister and get her approval. Didn't seem too hard... Although she was terrified to actually meet anyone else. No matter how many times she saw them on webcam, she just couldn't shake the feeling that they would wind up hating her or something. The baby hormones didn't help her situation, at all. In fact, they made everything ten times more susceptible to crying, anger, and even extreme happiness. Of course, the more... sensual side, was saved for Brett. Though he seemed reluctant to touch her lately; probably scared of hurting the baby.
By the time they were situated in the car, Mia was ready for another nap. She was so tired. She had barely said a word to his parents, and found her eyes closing and opening for long periods of time. She found herself dozed off in the car, and finally awoke to the sound of the door opening, and Brett putting a hand to her face. "Mmmmm... We're here?" She yawned and rubbed her eyes, smiling as her hands went to her stomach. their little one was kicking up a storm.

on the ride home, brett had asked where sophia was. generally, she would of come. his more flamboyant father, terri, had explained she'd gone over to a friends house earlier and should be home by the time they got back. it'd been a long time since he'd seen her; three years, really. by then she was about twelve, so a lot had changed. they still talked frequently over phone, she'd always call him when she had problems with friends or school - brett was a good listener. though so was terri, who was usually the first option. mia had gotten to know her well, too; when she'd gotten her period, she had offered to talk to her about everything. that was something that was a tad bit difficult for brett to help with, understandably.
the three of them had talked quietly throughout the car ride, catching up and everything. mia had fallen asleep, and terri kept on glancing back at her and smiling. she'd somewhat woken up once they'd gotten to southampton due to the tight turns through the suburban neighborhoods. once they had pulled into the drive way brett gently squeezed her thigh. "mmmmm... we're here?" she mumbled, rubbing her eyes then placing her hands on her stomach. her smile indicated that mara was kicking, which made brett all warm and happy. it was going to be soon, maybe only a month away until amaryllis was born. simply said, he was excited. "yep." he said, also sounding tired. they got out of the car, brett going over to mia just in case she needed help. generally she didn't, though you could never be too careful - which was pretty much his motto.
they unloaded the suitcases then began the short trip to the house. it wasn't particularly special; three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, dining room, a basement. as they stepped inside, a rather loud and large dog greeted them. "hey cassie." brett grinned and gave her a few pets. first time really touching and looking at a dog; connecting the feeling of fur and the appearance of it's seemed to match. she was a black lab and quite old, maybe thirteen by then. her wagging tail was painful, though; he eyeballed her as she went to go meet mia, making sure she wouldn't knock her down or something chaotic.
"sophia?" he called, looking up the stairs expectantly. instead she came from the kitchen, looking cautious. she must of shot up a foot or so - she must of been 5'3, at least. and pretty; her dark eyes were still huge, and her hair seemed to reach halfway down her back. shyly she walked over, staring at mia then at her stomach. probably absorbing the fact she'd be an aunt at twelve. "long time no see." brett said as she gave him a hug. yeah. three years is a long time." she backed up and smiled at mia. "hi. it's nice to meet you." as the two greeted, brett turned to his parents. "we're going to go unpack and everything. we'll be back down for dinner, though. terri smiled then headed off for the kitchen - tim helped them with the bags then went to his office.
they went to brett's old room, which was fairly plain since his parents had remodeled it. a light sort of olive walls, wood floor, a queen size bed, a desk and side table. he closed the door naturally then yawned and turned to mia. he smiled weakly, look exhausted. "so. how are you?" he asked simply.

Mia smiled as Brett's family welcomed her into the home, laughing as Brett whisked her off to his room when all the introductions were over with. She was about to comment on how cute his little sister was, when he asked her how she was. Blinking awkwardly, she sat down on his bed and flopped back, closing her eyes. Every step she took these days just wore her out to the max. It was horrible, actually. She just wanted Mara to come out so that Brett could look after her and deal with her rolling and kicking and hiccuping while Mia was actually able to take a nap without getting punched in the bladder every 40 minutes. It got a little annoying. But it's not like she could punch back. Mara was just a little baby growing inside of her; she didn't know any better.
Finally, she looked up at Brett and laughed, rubbing a hand over her stomach. "So tired. But a good kind of tired. Like, it's almost time, tired." She nodded and looked up at him, eyes bright. "I'm so excited for you to meet her. She's been rolling up a storm since last week." Mia nodded in a matter-of-fact manner and sat up again, running her fingers through her hair. She was excited to get unpacked and eat with his family. She hadn't had a family dinner in a long time. Well, not one with a father, let alone 2. Plus a little sister. She had always wanted one of those. But after she came along, her father had never ever thought about having any more children. She was the disgrace to the Dimitroula legacy. But she would show him what she could do the minute she had Mara. things would fall together. She'd go to business school, get her degree, and take over the company shares that were left to her, by blood relation. After all that, she'd be so into the business, that she could buy up his shares of the company, and take it over with her brother. It was a nearly flawless plan; but the flaws were minuscule, and didn't matter in the long run.
Mia stood up and ran her hands through her hair, tying it back out of her face. "I'm going to go ask Terri if he wants any help making dinner. Can you unpack my things?" She kissed Brett softly and ran her fingers through his hair, before keeping her arms around his neck. "Have I told you lately that I love you?" She grinned and kissed him again. "I love you, Brett Fischer." She nuzzled her nose against his own nose before letting go and opening the bedroom door, heading down the stairs.

mia flopped on the bed, looking just as tired as he was. she mentioned how mara had been moving quite a lot lately, and how she was so excited for him to meet her. brett smiled, looking genuinely happy with his eyes shining their new clear blue as he watched her on the bed. fuck, he loved her. he loved her a lot. "i'm beyond excited. we're close. really close." he mumbled, almost croaked. he was just so tired, he'd probably fall asleep while eating. she stood up and tied her hair back after leaning up to wrap her arms around his neck. brett kissed her back then leaned his forehead against her's and closed his eyes. "i'm going to go ask terri if he wants any help making dinner. can you unpack my things?" hm. he sighed then looked at her, smiling at her soft grin. "of course." "have i told you lately that i love you?" she kissed him again before continuing. "i love you, brett fischer." mia then nuzzled her nose against his and let go, heading off to go downstairs before brett had really gotten a chance to respond. as she was closing the bedroom door, he mumbled "i love you too, euphymia dimitroula."
he stood there for a few seconds before exhaling in a deep sigh. right, okay. unpack. brett threw her larger suitcase onto the bed, unzipped it then began to sort. wait, did she pack outfits? or should he just separate the pants and the shirts? he frowned, deeply concerned about what to do. they didn't seem organized in any what way. brett pulled the bagged liquids out from the bottom and onto his own suitcase, which was on the floor. okay. shirts. he carefully picked up a few delicate blouse looking things, as if worried that he'd wrinkle them, then gently placed them to his right. he continued like this, with her pant-like things to the left her bras and underwear above. brett yawned wide, shoving the palms of his hands to his eyes before starting to place them into the dresser. there were four drawers - because she had more clothes than he, she would get get two and he one. the extra drawer would just be used for the miscellaneous things, like socks or body mist. that should work.
he finished, feeling victorious though a bit woozy. his jaw stretched into another yawn before he fell onto the bed horizontally, with his knees bent so his feet brushed the wooden floor. brett stared up at the ceiling before closing his eyes. though only a for a moment. then he'd get up and get to work on his things, then go downstairs and see what mia was up to. yeah. thoughts of getting up echoed in his skull as he began to doze off, and before he knew it, someone was opening the squeaking door.

Mia spent the majority of the evening, walking around the kitchen, helping Terri cook supper. Once it was all ready, she took a breather while everything was in the oven and sat down in the nearest chair, putting her hands to her stomach, making a hungry-tummy-rub motion. She ate like a pig these days; it was a constant, never ending cycle of food that piled into her mouth and made her get bigger. It wasn't a bad though, though. Mara seemed to enjoy all the food. She was quite the brilliant little bugger, already giving mama trouble on the inside. She hoped the girl wouldn't be as active on the outside as she was on the inside. At least at night. The nights were the worst, 'cause that's when the little one woke up and rolled around inside her, causing a great big fuss. If she was this active at night, going to school and work would be quite the ordeal.
When Terri explained to her that supper was almost ready to come out of the oven, Mia smiled brightly and pushed herself off the chair, getting up to go get Brett. He said he'd be up by now, but he wasn't. Was it weird of her to get worried? It was probably just the baby hormones, but still. A slight bit unnerving for someone who was pregnant. Especially when stress and nerves and all that fun stuff could cause her to go into premature labour... Okay, now she was just overreacting. She needed to stop before she actually did go into labour. Maybe Brett would be able to tell her the date of birth, so she could count down. She doubted it, but it was worth a try, in the least.
She took her time getting up the stairs and pushed open the door of the room, smiling when she saw Brett's sleepy face, pressed cheek-down into the pillow. What a cutie. Her feet carried her across the floor lightly, and she sat down next to him, kissing his cheek. "So much for coming down to see what I was up to, huh?" She giggled and pushed his hair back out of his eyes, before laying down next to him. He was so adorable, it was amazing. Her fingers trailed slowly down the soft skin on the side of his face as she stared at his eyes, which looked a little foggy from sleeping. When her lips found his, she pulled herself closer to him and kissed him a few more times, smiling brightly. "Get up, sleepyhead. It's time to go and eat. Terri and I made dinner." She paused, then laughing. "Your sister told me to tell you she helped peel carrots."

mia laid down next to him, her face uplifted in a bright smile. every time he saw her he felt almost light headed and had the urge to kiss her repeatedly. it was one of the many things about having site he was thankful for - seeing mia. he felt foggy and tired; all he wanted to do was curl up with her and sleep. she placed gentle hands on his face and pressed her lips against his, snuggled closer then kissed him a few more times. how could he live without her? brett honestly couldn't imagine it. "get up, sleepyhead. it's time to go and eat. terri and i made dinner." he groaned, pulled her closer then closed his eyes. "your sister told me to tell you she helped peel carrots." he smiled and responded tiredly "sounds like something she'd say." brett sighed thickly then slowly began to detach himself. "you have no idea how much i'd rather just lay here with you." he mumbled.
clumsily he got up and stretched, exhaling loudly then rubbing his eyes. "so what'd you guys end up making?" he asked and yawned at the same time. considering both terry and mia were quite the cooks, he knew it'd be great either way. he wasn't very hungry, though. just exhausted and worn out. he waited for her to get up before leaving to go to the kitchen.
he was a bit wobbly to go down the stairs, trusting his automatic stair counting more than his cloudy site. there was a warm, thick aroma flooding the downstairs. the homey sound of pans clanking and people talking came from the kitchen which was connected to the dining room. "look who finally decided to get up and spend time with the family that lives 3,000 miles away." sophia said from the table, her tone a bit obnoxious. it was like her social shield, to hide behind behind cynical and sarcastic wit when someone she didn't know was around. "i was on a plane for the past seven hours." he replied as he walked over to see what they had cooked. "yeah, so was mia, and she was cooking." brett shot his sister a look. they had an argumentative past, although this was just ridiculous. first time they'd seen each other in a year and she was starting debates.
"enough of this already. food is ready, brett take a seat." terry interrupted whatever smart reply he was about to say. he could feel the old pattern settling in, and it was actually sort of nice. he missed the family. instead of sitting across from sophia like usual, he sat closest to the head of the table so that mia could be next to him. this way he sat with tim to his right, mia to his left, terry across and sophia diagonal.
